Poll: I last made a dispensing error..... : 03/01/2009 : AusPharm oftens wonders just how frequently dispensing errors are made. While today's poll won't tell the whole story we'd still be interested to know when you made your last dispensing error.

For this poll we'll define an 'error' as 'wrong drug' or 'wrong directions on label' that actually leaves the dispensary (but not necessarily the pharmacy). Please tick the relevant box in today's poll below. More....

This photo was first sent to us by Mike Lazarow but is not his own work so technically doesn't qualify as a Photo of the week.

It does, however, seem like a good photo with which to start 2009 anyway!   More... premium

Joke of the Week

Practice Pearls

12/12/2008 Pearl: 'Selling' generic substitutes

: Peter the Pearlcaster says:

'You want to buy a roll of Kodak film...  will two be enough?' That line we were taught many moons ago, at Kodak school, and you might not be surprised that they did often take two rolls. (And have you stopped beating your partner?) There are ways, and there are ways of asking questions that prompt towards the 'right' answer.  Watch any barrister in action.

Pushing generics is a Good Thing -- not only for our patients, also towards keeping us in business. Helping the boss's bottom line protects an employee pharmacist's job too. There are a few ways of going about this that have proven successful.

Where it is appropriate, let it be said. More... premium

Opinion

Workload Watchdog - Whose Responsibility? :: Michael Scavone : 11/12/2008 : Following Ron Batagol's spirited quest to bring the profession's "sausage factories" to account, and David Brown of Guild Insurance's recent response to same, pharmacy consultant Michael Scavone in our AusPharm feature article today wonders whether the role of "watchdog" in this instance is being shouldered quite as broadly as it should...

"To this point, I have seen little evidence of pharmacy organisations and government working together to arrive at sensible solutions with well defined outcomes addressing the issue of excessive workloads.

Which organisations are responsible for ensuring high standard practice and reducing excessive workloads? Do they work well together?"   More premium

AusPharm(e)news announcements

The man from Kaomagma : 31/12/2008 : In a weak moment and in the spirit of the 'silly season' AusPharm invited 'listers to send along posts that didn't meet our usual 'pharmacy relevant' criteria and  might be 'interesting or quirky or just plain weird'.

Well, Sydney pharmacist Bruce Moffat (that's him at right) sent along this epistle in response, gratuitously including his preliminary comments:

"Silly? You want silly? I'm your man
Happy almost New Year
That Anon produced some good work and this isn't one of them but it certainly meets your January editorial standards.
Sort of Henry Lawson meets Pam Ayres.
A little bit cultural and a lot bit silly and not very PC.  Perfect!"

Thanks Bruce! More....

New AusPharm Feature

What it does to you :: Veronica Nou : 18/12/2008 : In her latest feature article, Veronica Nou permits us another peek into her slightly kooky world and reflects on pharmacists' ability to multi-task under pressure.

"I do think our profession has a tendency to shape us. Not that we’re all doppelgangers. Far from it. Even within the profession we have somehow categorised ourselves into groups – us, them, retailers, discounters, professionals, community, hospital, consultant, owners, employees, whatever. What has however become common to us all is the amazing ability to handle ridiculous amounts of work in near miraculous time frames. To stay cool under pressure, and to roll with the punches. Crisis? No worries. We are the problem solvers, and not one at a time, either. We can process information at almost the same speed as a Pentium Intel QuadCore®."   More... premium

Testosterone effective for postmenopausal low libido, safety unknown
Essential Evidence PLUS 6/1/2009
Clinical Question: Is a testosterone patch safe and effective for the treatment of low libido in postmenopausal women?

Bottom Line: A 300-mcg testosterone patch applied daily modestly improves symptoms in postmenopausal women with low libido. Although generally well tolerated, there were several cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the treatment groups. Long-term surveillance of a larger group of women is needed before this is widely recommended, and any women opting for this treatment should be reminded to have regular mammograms.
