Raising The Bra - a breast cancer awareness promotion : 03/07/2009 : Amanda Bryce and staff at Gerald Burns Pharmacy in WA are really proud of their contribution to raising awareness of breast cancer through Purple Bra Day last month.

According to Amanda, although staff were a bit shy to embrace the idea of wearing a Purple Bra on the outside, everyone soon came on board and the response from our customers was incredible. (Especially the old boys!)

The goal was to raise $1000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation, as Gerald Burns Pharmacy committed $1 to every bra donated. After the promotion, the the bras will be sent to Wikasa - a Women's Refuge Centre in Uganda, where Amand's aunt works as a volunteer.

"5 garbage bags of bras were donated. Although the pharmacy didn't quite make the 1000 it was aiming for, the effort of 573 was extraordinary and will help support the Ugandan women of Wikasa Women's Refuge in several ways", said Amanda.

A fair crack of the whip :: Bill Arnold : 28/6/2009 : I remember many many years ago hearing a senior (=old) Guild official admonishing us young agitators by telling us that we did not know all the wondrous things “we have done for you”, and how “you are in a good position (now) because of our (past) hard work”. One of us reminded him that our future was in front of us, his behind him.

That said, I see a troublesome lack of perspective in some of the discussions now taking place, and a brief look at ancient times might be a good thing.  More... premium

PSA Tasmania Success Again at Agfest : 10/06/2009 : Once again in 2009, the Tasmanian Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia manned a tent at Agfest, Tasmania's premier rural event. Agfest  has the second highest attendance of all Australia's agricultural field days with in excess of 70,000 people attending Agfest this year. According to PSA, most of them seemed to visit the PSA tent.

Over 1600 information packs with Self Care cards, Medimates and safe drinking and smoking information were handed out. Pharmacy students and pharmacists helped children make 500 jars of hand cream for Mothers Day.  The Health Minister, Lara Giddings also visited the tent on Thursday to see the activities in full swing. Over the 3 days of the event the volunteer pharmacists and interns talked to many patrons giving general health advice, information about the safe use of medicines, and smoking cessation.

NSW MBA gets up : 02/07/2009 : During June, the NSW Branch of the Pharmacy Guild encouraged pharmacy employees to sign up to a new Multi-Employer Business Agreement. Pharmacies whose employees agree to adopt the Multi-Employer Business Agreement will not be bound by the terms of the new Pharmacy Industry Award 2010.

AusPharm understands those pharmacy staff concerned have voted to accept the MBA.

Poll result: sick certificates : 02/07/2009 : This week's poll asked 'listers to help us find out how much use consumers are making of pharmacies in order to get sick certificates for time off work.

The results (n=115), shown below, come as something a surprise to us with the scheme apparently having a minimal takeup in pharmacy.

Surely this a classic example of a 'new professional service' that pharmacy should be embracing?

Pharmacist employee wages – where to now? :: Michael Scavone : 1/7/2009 : Much has been posted on AusPharmList about this subject matter recently. Last week's AusPharm poll indicated 92% pharmacist employee dissatisfaction with the current system. The poll showed that 49% of employees consider their wages dreadful while 43% consider that wages could be better.

Is anyone surprised by this?  I believe not!

How did the level of pharmacist employee wages fall so far behind compared to other professions and, historically, even within the profession? In my opinion there are two reasons for this. The first is the existence of a very strong employer focused pro business group, the Pharmacy Guild (PGA) and the second is because the organisation charged with representing pharmacist employees, APESMA,  has been relatively ineffectual in the very complex and difficult areas of Industrial Relations (IR).  More... premium

Employee pharmacists' wages and working conditions :: Geoff March : 29/6/2009 : AusPharmList has made fascinating reading in recent weeks as many community pharmacy practitioners struggle with a real sense of frustration around their profession and their own ability to effectively consistently contribute to their patients' health and welfare.

There are two aspects contributing to this frustration; firstly the feeling of a real lack of appreciation of their contribution as evidenced by the angst over remuneration and working conditions; and secondly about the continuing focus on a supply model for community pharmacy and the refusal of the Guild to break free of this “old thinking” practice model.  More... premium

Paracetamol regs to be reviewed? : 03/07/2009 : Following proposals in the US to make changes to the maximum recommended daily dose of paracetamol, Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says it will "review the current use and misuse of paracetamol-containing medicines to identify if any regulatory action is warranted".

However, the Australian Self-Medication Industry (ASMI), the peak industry body representing non-prescription consumer healthcare products, said today further regulatory measures on paracetamol are not warranted in Australia as consumers here had already benefited from a range of safeguards to ensure the safe and quality use of these products. Joke of the Week

Why condoms come in boxes of 3, 6 & 12 : 03/07/2009 : A man walks into a pharmacy with his 13 year old son.

They happen to walk by the condom display, and the boy asks."What are these, Dad? To which the man matter-of-factly replies, "Those are called Condoms, son. Men use them to have safe sex".

"Oh I see," replied the boy. "Yes, I've heard of safe sex in health class at School"

He looks over the display and picks up a package of 3 and asks, "Why are there 3 in this package?"

The dad replies, "Those are for high schoolboys, one for Friday, one for Saturday, and one for Sunday." More....

More on the NSW MBA : 03/07/2009 : As reported yesterday, a new Multi-Employer Business Agreement was agreed to by staff in some NSW pharmacies during June. The NSW Branch of the Guild has now lodged the MBA with the Workplace Authority for assessment  against the no-disadvantage test by the Workplace Advocate.

The test makes sure the agreement doesn't, on balance, reduce an employee's overall terms and conditions of employment, usually by comparing it to an existing award. More....
